Q&A: The After Effect

Take some time during the holidays to read up about The After Effect!

They are a highly energetic 5-piece Rock n' Roll band from Michigan.  They're adding a new, modernized flare to 80's hair and classic rock!

Let your hair down, tighten your leather, and rock on to some loud drums, raunchy guitars, pounding bass, and a rowdy frontman!

(Hosted by Patrick Rangel, So Fresh Int; Answered by Alex Pearson, The After Effect):

Q: Correct me if I'm wrong, but you guys just released a new record.  Tell us about it (where it was recorded, who recorded it, it's theme, etc.).

A:     This record is our pride and joy.  It’s got a variety of music on it so hopefully it reaches a wide audience.  We don’t want to attach ourselves to one sub-genre because we do not want every song to sound the same and we don’t want to be boring.  We feel these songs on this record are the best of our originals so far.  It’s got a lot of heart, and a whole lot of love and emotion in it, so hopefully everyone can feel it when they listen to it.  It was recorded in Muskegon, Michigan at Park Studios by Aaron Eikenberry.  He was amazing to work with, and we could not be more grateful for all of his hard work and time.

Q: How was working in the studio like? Is there anything you've experienced/learned in the studio that made you better musicians today?

A:     Working in the studio was almost too much fun.  We got to see how everything comes together in the studio, and we really got to see what parts we weren’t as smooth as we should have been on but we got it worked out.  We also got to listen to ourselves closely, change songs for the better, and focus on all of the little things.

Q: From all the positive feedback and anticipation your fans had for this release, what would you say your next step would be?

A:     To keep working hard and improving as much as we can.  We hope to release more music after a little while and get some bigger shows!

Q: Is there anything, individually or as whole, that you feel you need to work on?  If so, what?

A:     Everything.  We all need to constantly work at getting better as musicians and people.  There is always room for improvement.  When you wanna succeed as bad as you wanna breathe, then you will be successful.

Q: Clearly there's some Classic Rock/Rock n' Roll/Metal influences in your sound.  Name a few of those artists.

A:     There’s too many artists to list because we are all influenced by everything (Jazz, funk, rock, metal, etc.)  The Black Crowes, AC/DC, Motley Crue, Black Veil Brides, Kiss, and Stevie Ray Vaughan...that’s just to name a few.

Q: Many of your fans can agree that you guys revamped/renovated components of classic rock and in a way, made it your own.  For those who  are curious, tell us how exactly you came up with your own sound.

A:     It just happened I guess.  We all were influenced by many different artists and events.  When we all come together and one person shows an idea, it morphs over time into something that is a mix of all of our musical taste.  It’s a lot of fun to see what we will come up with.
Please take the time to check out their new EP, their current pride and joy.  From reading, you can get a glimpse of all the hard work they put into it.

Every other day starting on Christmas, they'll be releasing a song off the record!

(Q&A cont'd):

Q: How did you first get into music (as a band)?

A:     We were all new musicians in middle school (we are seniors now) and our bassist, Ryan, brought John, our drummer, in with Me (Alex) and Matt on guitars.  We all had similar music tastes, and just clicked as friends right away.

Q: How long have you been together as a band?

A:     We have been together as a band officially for almost 2 years now.  John, Ryan, Matt and I have been playing together for about 5 years now and we added our vocalist Chris last April.

Q: What's your favorite part of being involved in music?

A:     Our favorite part of being involved in music is that we are a close family.  We all share the same passion and desire to be successful in the music business.  We all push each other to grow as musicians and people.  Working together on writing, or recording is the most fun along with sharing the stage together!  Also, that it’s a good time and music is always there for us no matter what.

Q: Are there any accomplishments, recognition, events, etc. that you're proud of?  If so, what?

A:     We are proud of everything we’ve done and how much we’ve grown.  Most importantly, we are proud of our first EP, the “Love Tough EP” which you can hear on our facebook page!

Q: What is on the horizon for The After Effect? Any cool news/releases/shows?

A:     Every other day we’ll be posting a new song off of our new EP!  We’ll have more shows coming up, and eventually more songs so just like us on facebook and keep up with us!

Q: How's the music scene in Michigan? Name some strengths and weaknesses.

A:     In our area in Michigan, there are a lot of good bands, a lot of people in the music scene that help smaller bands, and there are many places to play.  Sadly, there are not a lot of people that want to come out and see a band that they have never heard of.  Fortunately, radio stations, venues, etc. are all very supportive of the local music scene.  Unfortunately, If you want to get big, Michigan is not the best place to do it.

Q: Lastly, is there anything else you'd like to add/say to our readers?

A:     If you have made it to this part of the interview, we’re really proud of you and we love you.  Thanks for taking the time, and please give our music a listen and tell us what you think!
Also, never eat yellow snow.
