Q&A: The Icarus Account

For fans of:
Matt Nathanson     Chase Coy

Ben Rector          The Script

(Hosted by Patrick Rangel, So Fresh Int; Answered by Trey Turner, The Icarus Account):

Q: Last year you released a record in August. How was the feedback so far? What is the next step?

A:     The feedback has been awesome, especially at the beginning (we sold more in pre-orders and in the first week on itunes that we had ever sold in an entire month of previous releases).  I think the coolest thing about it is that we continue to keep selling the entire album, as opposed to just one or two popular singles.  It shows that we really do have a dedicated fanbase that wants to listen to an entire CD of our music, and it's not just one catchy song that is blowing up on the internet.  It is rewarding because having an album really sell well these days is rare, and a lot of labels and bigger name
producers/managers won't even count on selling albums, just singles.  I think the next step is to just keep releasing quality music, and hopefully songs that are written better, produced better, and performed better.

Q: How did you two first get into music?

A:     We first started playing music when we were about 5 or 6 years old.  Our parents wanted us to take classical piano and violin lessons.  We did that until we were 12 which is when we started playing the guitar.  Once we started playing guitar, music really took off for us because we were suddenly able to play music that we really liked and it soon was accompanied by writing.

Q: How long have you been together?

A:     We are twins, so we have been playing together all of our lives, but officially we started making music for the Icarus Account 6 years ago during our senior year of high school.

Q: The Icarus Account is influenced by…?

A:  Good question...Influenced by bands such as Dashboard Confessional, David Crowder Band, Underoath, The Fray, Shawn McDonald, Copeland and a million more.

Q: What's your favorite part of being involved in music?

A:     I think for me it's performing.  I love the writing and recording process but ultimately I want to play a song live for a real audience.  There's something real and personal about the emotion that is conveyed during a specific live performance that can never quite be conveyed on an album.

Q: What have you accomplished/were recognized for that you're proud of as
musicians?

A:     We have had a few different moments of, "man I can't believe we've made
it this far" to name a few...

The first time we were named to
purevolume.com's list of top unsigned bands of the year.  That was a
list that we looked up to in high school so it was really cool to get there.

Being featured in AP magazine was awesome.

Selling out our
first international show in Canada.

And lastly, it's been really cool
to just see the whole project grow, to see the number of copies of our
new album that were pre-ordered was just incredible compared to where we started.

Q: What's on the horizon for The Icarus Account?

A:     We will be doing a spring tour in March and before that we will be writing a lot and recording some demos for a new record.  We don't have any specific plans for a new release yet, but we are always writing and I'm sure we will have an EP or full-length coming out before the end of the year. We also are hoping to do a west coast tour over the summer... we haven't been out there in almost 3 years so it's long overdue!

Q: How has your relationship grown over the years together as musicians, especially
as brothers?

A:     I think that we have learned to compartmentalize a little bit more.  It's hard just to be brothers and get along much less when you are living in a car together and essentially running a business together.  It has helped us to define certain roles in terms of the business aspects of the band that we each do independently so that when we play music together we can just focus on that.  And even in music, we have learned some things that I do better and some things that Ty does better and if possible it's good for us to stick to those roles.

Q: You've mentioned before that as of right now you two are living in separate
cities. How has that affected you two in general? Has it affected your
career? If so, how?

A:     I think it helps keep us a little bit sane.  When we tour, we are constantly together and essentially we are living in a car together so living in separate cities enables us to get some space, each write separately and it helps us look forward to coming back together to hang out and share some new songs with each other.  It does make some of the business aspects of the band a little tougher because we can't always be writing together, or if there is an opportunity for a last minute show it is harder to take it.  It also makes it harder to practice.  But it helps us to be more professional.  Sometimes as
brothers, it's hard to be professional with each other because we want to goof off or make fun of each other and not be serious, but when we come together for the band we know that it's business time and we need to both take it seriously and focus on the task at hand.

Q: How was it like playing shows in Canada last December? Are there other places
you plan on visiting in the near future?

A:     It was cold, haha.  It is always hard for a couple of Florida boys to venture off into the great white north during the winter, but our fans make it worth it!  We are doing a midwest tour in March and hopefully a full country tour in the summer.

Q: Lastly, is there anything else you'd like to add that I've
missed/anything you'd like to tell our readers?

A:     Our music is really personal to us (in particular, our latest album "Carry Me Home [shown above]") so we would love for you to check it out.  We also personally run all of our pages and emails (FB, Twitter, youtube, theicarusaccount@gmail.com) so we would love to hear from you or talk to you about our music or just life in general.  It means that world to us that you are listening and we want to take the time to connect with you!
